Dr. Roettger trained many champion debaters at Parsons and many times brought them to state-wide and country-wide championships. Many of his students went on to become astute businessmen, attorneys, and politicians.
His innovative teaching methods included having each debator switch sides half-way through, to develop mental flexibility, the ability to think quickly, to counter arguments, and to see that there are always at least two sides to every issue.
His skill in teaching was to help the students form ideas and statements that had a firm foundation. When M.I.U. bought the Parsons College campus, he continued to serve the local students. While retired, on a volunteer basis, he also served as the advisor to the M.I.U. Debate Club.
Dr. Roettger was also "Dr. Kendo" the magician, for the entertainment of children and adults alike. He performed in various places in Iowa, for charity fund raisers, and as the advisor for the M.I.U. Magic Club. He would teach, through his magic, that many times what is observed with the senses is not the ultimate truth.
The published scientific research on the Transcendental Meditation technique, and the progress he saw in the M.I.U. students he advised inspired him to learn to practice the TM technique. He was a great integrator of the "town" and "gown" communities. He was a friend to all. His sense of humor was witty and uplifting. His jokes would usually contain a valuable message.
Dr. Roettger is survived by his wife and two children. He was greatly loved and needed in the Fairfield community. With this scholarship, we shall always remember our dear friend and great teacher (maha rishi), Dr. Kenneth Roettger.
